» Youth health advocates present the Y4H charter to the UN Secretary General
The Y4H charter outlines the aspirations of youth on health and other developmental issues. It was a result of four days of intensive deliberation during GYM 2006 and was further discussed and deliberated by the participants of GYM 2006 on return to their individual countries. The intent of this charter is to solicit support for introduction and implementation of health promoting policies from the Governments of the member states of the UN.

The charter calls for global and national health policies which protect youth from tobacco and other addictions, HIV – AIDS, environmental degradation, hazardous road conditions, war and violence and promote access to healthy diets and physical activity. It recognizes the links between health and development and calls for broad societal action to influence the multiple determinants of health, to assure sustainable health for young persons all over the world.

The charter was further converted into a condensed appeal, and a worldwide signature campaign was launched to collect supporting signatures. Signatures were collected both in electronic and print formats, from youth and adults worldwide.

On the occasion of UN Day (October 24, 2007); a delegation of Y4H advocates from India, Singapore and USA presented the Y4H charter with 225,000 supporting signatures to the Esteemed Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr. Ban Ki-moon at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Y4H movement was greatly appreciated and it was felt that it is a unique and a very important initiative in the area of youth health. During their visit to the USA, the Y4H delegation also had an opportunity to interact with Ms. Rachel Mayanja- Assistant Secretary General and Special Adviser to the Secretary General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women. Ms. Mayanja also commended the Y4H movement and expressed her concerns over the rising numbers of HIV / AIDS cases amongst the youth. She felt that a youth based peer to peer advocacy network was a very strong step in educating the youth towards prevention and control of this global pandemic, especially amongst the youth.

In addition to the appointments at the United Nations, the Y4H delegation also interacted with the delegates of a youth based tobacco prevention organization, Reality Check.

Several other young Y4H advocates collected signatures for the appeal. In addition to the countries represented at the United Nations, notable contributions were made by the Y4H delegates from Argentina, Georgia, South Africa and Uruguay.
